Sandycove and Corrib win U15 Cup titles

Sandycove won the girls U15 Cup title after beating follow Dublin club Half Moon in yesterday evenings final. The two finalists had already met in their group game the previous day where it finished 8-3 to Sandycove who went on to take top spot in the group and would go on to face last years winners Tribes in their semi final. In Group B it was Newry who took top spot after beating runners up Tribes in an extremely close game, winning 2-1 in their group game on Friday night and they would go on to face Half Moon in the other semi final.

The semi finals saw Sandycove beat local club Tribes 26-11 while Half Moon beat Newry 13-7 to set up a rematch against Sandycove.

In the final, Half Moon took an early lead but it was Sandycove who led at the end of the 1st quarter 2-1. Each team traded goals in the second quarter to leave the score 3-2 at half time. Sandycove then scored early in the third before adding another with Half Moon responding to be only 2 behind at the end of the third but it was a lead that sandycove kept throughout the fourth quarter to finish 7-5 winners and to win their first U15 Cup title.

In the Bronze medal match Tribes came out on top against Newry to take 3rd place with a 16-6 win.

Girls MVP of the tournament was Hannah Byrne (Sandycove).

In the boys competition Corrib won the U15 Cup after beating Belfast club Cathal Brugha in the final. Both finalists were unbeaten heading into the final as both teams topped their groups winning all their group games. In the semi final Corrib faced Dublin side Sandycove (20-5) while in the second semi, Cathal Brugha faced last years winners Clonard in what was an extremely close game with Brugha coming out on top (11-10).

In the final, it was the Galway side who lead from start to finish with a strong performance winning out 17-9 over Cathal Brugha to win their 10th U15 Cup title.

In the bronze medal match it was Clonard who took home 3rd place beating Sandycove 15-12.

Boys MVP of the tournament was Mihajlo Lazic (Corrib).

A big thank you to our delegate Decky McKerr, all our referees & table officials, President of Ireland Water Polo Adrian Hanna who was in attendance for the presentations of medals and in particular to Tournament Directors, Teresa Moran and Eamon Caulfield for organising and running the tournament over the weekend.

Also thank you to our pool providers in Leisureland and Kingfisher Pool as well as their staff who were very obliging in making hours available over the weekend and providing assistance when needed.
