The National Water Polo Committee and wider Swim I The National Water Polo Committee and wider Swim Ireland Water Polo community are deeply saddened by the passing of 2018 Swim Ireland Hall of Famer Wally Clarke — a lifelong servant and true champion of our sport. We extend our sincere condolences to the Clarke family at this very sad time.

Dedicating over five decades to aquatic sport and playing a central figure in Cathal Brugha Swimming and Water Polo Club, Wally was a legendary and much‑loved presence at a regional and national level, his commitment and leadership has left a lasting legacy.

Beginning his service in 1968 as Treasurer of the Irish Water Polo Association, he went on to hold many key roles, including Secretary, Water Polo Representative to the Irish Amateur Swimming Association Board, and Treasurer during one of the organisation’s most challenging periods.

Wally was also a committed supporter of Masters swimming, serving on the Masters Committee from 2004 to 2007. After qualifying as a Swim Ireland referee in 2007, he became a familiar, respected, and steady presence at national and regional competitions. His influence extended internationally as well, representing Swim Ireland at European and World Aquatics conferences and helping bring the 2003 European Short Course Championships to Dublin.

Wally was also an advocate for inclusive sport. He supported major events including the Special Olympics, World Down Syndrome Championships, and the European Transplant & Dialysis Games. And of course, he famously donned the red suit on many occasions for the Swim Ireland Christmas Cracker gala!

A former President of Swim Ireland, Wally’s contribution to our sport is immeasurable.

The President and Chairperson, along with the members of the National Water Polo Committee, extend their sincere condolences to Wally’s family and friends, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
