Corrib and Tribes win U17 Cup titles

Corrib retained their Boys U17 Cup title after beating Dublin club St. Vincent’s in what was a repeat of the 2023 final. Both finalist had been drawn in the same group where they faced off on Friday evening in their first game of the weekend with Corrib winning out 16-11. Corrib then had comfortable wins in their quarter and semi finals beating Drogheda and Clonard respectively. While St Vincents beat Half Moon and Newry in their quarter and semi final matches.

In the final, the first half was a tight affair with both sides level 3-3 mid way through the second quarter before the Galway side started to pull ahead to lead 7-4 at HT, a lead they extended in the second half to finish 13-6 winners.

In the Bronze medal match it was Newry who provided too strong for Clonard to take 3rd place with a 12-2 win.

Boys MVP of the tournament was Paddy Cunningham Smyth (Corrib).

In the girls competition Tribes won the U17 Cup for the third year a row after beating St Vincent’s in the final. Both finalists were unbeaten heading into the final as both teams topped their groups winning both their group games. Tribes went on to face Clonard in their semi final where they were comfortable winners (13-7), while the second semi final proved an closer affair with St Vincents beating Belfast team Diamonds 6-3.

In the final, it was the Galway side who won the first quarter (3-1) and maintained that lead throughout the final to finish 6-3 winners to win their 6th U17 Cup title.

In the bronze medal match it was Clonard who took home 3rd place beating Diamonds 10-9.

Girls MVP of the tournament was Laura Casserly (Tribes).

A big thank you to all our referees, table officials, President of Ireland Water Polo, Kevin Armstrong, who was in attendance for the presentation of medals and in particular to Tournament Director, Phil Kelly and Officials Delegate, Decky McKerr, who both played a huge part in the running of the tournament over the weekend.
